" Anything worth doing
is worth doing poorly - until you learn to do it well."

Steve Brown

Island Girl Art Studio is situated in the heart of Nanaimo, BC on beautiful Vancouver Island. We offer small, intimate classes that feature lots of individual instruction for all participants in a supportive atmosphere.  The concept of classes in an artist's studio is to create community and inclusion where everyone feels welcome and learns or is inspired by each other as well as the instructor. Creative us of materials, techniques, the creative process as well as "how to" is taught in the studio.

My Philosophy about  Art:

At Island Girl Art Studio , we believe that everyone is an artist because as someone famous once said - "Art is simply a way of "seeing". What you see and what someone else "sees'', even while looking at the same thing may be completely different. Pretty cool, eh?

We believe in the process of making art and the wonder and awe of "getting lost in the moment" while creating . This happens whether you are a serious artist or whether you simply make art for relaxation and enjoyment.

In my  classes and workshops I focus on  process-centered programs which means I teach skills, encourage imagination, exploration , learning and fun rather than focus on the results. Interesting thing is, when you do that - the beginner and the intermediate artist see great results!

All skill levels are welcome in this supportive, non-critical atmosphere - come catch the creative buzz!

YES, everyone can do this! No special talent, or ability is required.
If I learned to do this, so can anyone - HONEST! I have been a teacher for a long time and I can tell you that the more you trust the process ( and me to guide you), you can't go wrong. If I had a nickel for every adult who has told me stories of someone who, with one negative or insulting  word or phrase crushed their creative efforts ....unfortunately, I'd be rich.
But we can change ALL THAT -if you give yourself permission to start anew...........I promise to encourage your beautiful, gentle creative spirit...........let's plant the seeds and watch it grow!

ABOUT Penny Maday:

I have been an artist for over forty years and a teacher for thirty-two years! YIKES, can I  REALLY be that old!? WOW...I have taught in public, private, Outreach and First Nation Schools across two Canadian provinces, as well as developing and delivering art curriculum for numerous community agencies and public education courses for children, youth and adults of all ages. I am also an artist with the Nanaimo Art Gallery's Artist In the Schools Program where I design and deliver Art instruction in schools across central Vancouver Island. I am a painter who works in acrylic, water-color , mixed media , en caustic, metal, glass, and lime stone fresco.
I am an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Although I've been making art all my life,  I always want to learn new things and master my craft so I can also inspire others.
Over the last several years I have studied with notable Canadian water color artist Harold Allanson as well as Leslie Redhead, studied gouache and mixed media with Carla O'Connor, water media with Stephen Quiller and  John Salminen,  as well as acrylics with Nicholas Pearce and Robert Burridge, and glass fuse and sandblasting  techniques from Chris Smith.   I also  took a month long course from Abbie Aspen of Aspen Graphics, learning how to hand paint and airbrush designs for automotive  and commercial applications -  all those flames, pin-striping, hand lettering, gold leaf that you've seen on collector cars and trucks ! Wow! These ideas, techniques and materials have fueled my creativity and are finding their way   into my  art !
My acrylic and mixed media work has been featured in  North Light Book's
Encite 2/Color Passions: The Best of Mixed Media.
