The Space to Create

Island Girl Art Studio is the space where I create and work daily as a professional artist, but within its walls is an area dedicated to teaching classes and workshops, although I have been all over the world teaching on location too. I have spent 40 years creating curriculum/programs and teaching in  private, public and Independent schools, in community centres and in corporate  wellness or retreat environments all over the world, as well  as in my studio.

The studio, located in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, has its own kind of magic; a place where students are free to create, explore and learn in a supportive atmosphere and where all of an artist’s tools, materials, training, and experience are there for you to experience and enjoy. Over the last ten years, I have had the privilege to be part of the journey of hosting so many lovely people from all over the world and share their passion, excitement, and desire to create.

The art created here has been wrapped up to board a plane, mailed, tucked into a suitcase, and taken back home to England, Australia, Viet Nam, China, Brazil, the US, Chile, India, and other glorious places. And left behind is the memory of the joy and creative journey we took together in the studio.

While having a strong background in traditional representational work, Penny creates Art in watercolour, acrylics, Italian limestone fresco, printmaking, botanical inks, and drawing media. However, Penny's true love is her large abstract, contemporary work in mixed media.  The best examples of this work can be seen in her  'Love Letters To Leonardo Series' which combines drawing, collage and photography. Her work has appeared in shows in Rome, Florence, Berlin, Vancouver and Vancouver Island and has been featured in  North Light Books (Encite 2/Color Passions: The Best of Mixed Media) as well as numerous print and online magazines in North America.
